Pope Benedict says predecessor left Vatican ‘in hell of a mess’

Pope Benedict with a candle

Pope Benedict has broken with centuries of tradition and criticized his predecessor as Pontiff. He claims that the Vatican was in a terrible state; dirty, dusty and smelly and there were even mouldy vegetables in the bottom of the fridge.

‘When I arrived, you could hardly get down the corridor for piles of free newspapers and pizza leaflets that had been left piling up at the front door. I had to throw out the old mattress. The whole place stank to be honest. He was obviously much too old and should have been in a home.’
