Home Office and Channel 4 launch ‘Time or No Time’
Home Secretary John Reid has teamed up with Channel 4 to launch a new initiative aimed at tackling criticism of the Home Office’s sentencing policy. ‘Time or No Time’, based on the popular Noel Edmonds TV show, allows convicts to select their own custodial sentence from a number of boxes seen only by the viewer.

‘This is another wonderful example of a public-private partnership, demonstrating that New Labour can continue to innovate in all areas of society’, explained John Reid to viewers of the new TV show sponsored by Carphone Warehouse. ‘By taking the responsibility away from the judges, and putting the whole process into the hands of light entertainment TV producers, we are bringing complete transparency to sentencing policy’ said the Home Secretary.
However the initiative has brought criticism from Civil Liberties groups who point out that under the scheme, minor offenders might end up with life imprisonment while mass murderers could just get an ASBO or even be set free if they are lucky enough to choose the right box.
‘Deal of No Deal’ Producers Endemol are also in discussions with the Government about using another of their TV formats to reduce prison overcrowding. Under the plan live TV cameras would be placed inside British prisons and each week viewers can nominate a felon to be evicted.
However, the Deal or No Deal producers said they would not be using any TV formats from earlier on in Noel Edmonds TV career, such as the Late Late Breakfast Show. ‘We don’t have capital punishment in this country…’ said a Home Office spokesman.
