The news before it happens…

‘2006 is back!’ declare retro fans

Remember Saddam Hussein’s execution? Prime Minister Blair? The Muslim veils row? How about Sienna Miller and Kate Moss? Where were you when Lily Allen, Gnarls Barclay and The Arctic Monkeys were topping the charts?

If you’re old enough to remember the days when girls would go out binge drinking; when checks, sequins and white crochet dresses were gracing the catwalks; or when couples would drive in their 06 reg Audi TTs to a Multiplex to watch Little Miss Sunshine, there’s good news… Not-so ancient history is back in fashion!

Hot on the heels of the seventies and eighties revivals, the latest retro-trend that everyone’s talking about is 2006! Suddenly last year is not so last year after all! Camera phones, Sat-navs and HDTV are all back in fashion. And the must-have gadget is a slightly bulkier i-pod with a bit less storage space.

Kids are digging out last year’s trainers from their wardobes and blowing the slight covering of dust from last year’s MP3 Player. And Playstation 3 is no longer the must-have games console either. Now all the kids want is to get the Playstation 2 out again. As for games, forget Fifa 07 – it’s Fifa 06 that the kids are into! ‘It was much better when Ashley Cole played for Arsenal and Shevchenko was at AC Milan’ said one excited teenager. ‘I don’t know why I ever stopped playing Fifa 06’

Fashion experts can’t agree on how long the ’06 craze will last. ‘I don’t know that the fascination with 2006 will ever go away completely.’ said Tristram Delores, editor of Fashionista Fortnightly, ‘But word on the catwalk is that the next big retro craze could well be February 2007. Or March, as soon as it’s April.’
