The Mail on Sunday’s glossy supplement is giving philanthropists an unique opportunity to adopt an illegal immigrant. Readers can pick their ‘illegal’ from a catalogue of hopefuls before setting up a standing order of £10 a month to ensure there is money in the coffers for a ticket home once all avenues of appeal have been exhausted. For a small additional payment the returned immigrant will send a one-off letter thanking their sponsor for reuniting them with the poverty and repression they feared they might never see again. Most sponsors, though, have reacted with outrage at the prospect of receiving such a demeaning letter for a £2 investment that could more usefully be put towards that lovely Royal Doulton tea set on page 56.
