OFT calls for 14 day cooling off period for forced marriages
In one of its most strongly-worded reports yet, the Office of Fair Trading today denounced the ‘occasionally questionable’ high-pressure techniques used by practitioners of forced marriages.
In one particularly outspoken passage, the authors declared that: ‘In our opninion, the current standard of self-regulation amongst forced marry-ers still leaves something to be desired, following the mild reservations expressed in our previous review.’ before concluding: ‘All too often it appears that consumers are still rushed into the forced marriage transaction without sufficient time to weigh up alternative options. For this reason we recommend a self-regulated two week cooling off period for both parties.’
‘We must stress that this is possibly one of the very last chances for the forced marriage industry. If these steps are not impemented in the next 8-10 years, we will be forced to act, and publish another strongly worded report.’Click to send this story to a friend
