A Chelmsford man today made the terrible mistake of buying his wife the birthday present that she had specifically requested.

Keith Daly, 38, had been congratulating himself on his purchase of a summer dress his wife Michelle had been dropping hints about for months, little realising the upset his present was about to cause.

‘What was he thinking?’ a furious Michelle asked her disbelieving friends. ‘I haven’t been so insulted since Jamie Grover bought me 10 Benson & Hedges and a packet of condoms for my fourteenth birthday. I may have told him to get me that dress, but come on, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that I actually wanted a hand-carved oak dressing table and a short break in the Canaries does it!’
