Stopping at traffic lights to become optional
The Highways Agency announced proposals to make stopping at red traffic lights optional rather than mandatory, following publication of research showing that most motorists consider the ‘endless’ 50-second wait for lights to change to green a bigger inconvenience than the possibility of permanent injury or death.
‘The scheme has worked on the Continent for years, we’re just falling in line with the rest of the EU’ claimed an Agency spokesman, ‘Since the use of indicators became a thing of the past we thought it was time the public had more choice at traffic lights too. Britain’s hard-pressed motorists will now have more time to make mobile calls and do the crossword without the fuss of waiting for red lights.’
