Florists arrested in road death crackdown
A number of florists across the UK have been raided following a sharp rise in the number of accidents at several notorious blackspots. The raids occurred in response to complaints that floral tributes commemorating previous road tragedies were restricting motorists’ vision.
‘We received information that roadside displays, marking a spot where someone had been killed, had been set up by over-zealous florists, many with failing businesses.’ Chief Supt David Tudge from New Scotland Yard told reporters. ‘Blind spots, sharp bends and low, narrow bridges were found to be obscured by these floral tributes, exacerbating an already dangerous situation.’
In some extreme instances, police found evidence that florists were actively lobbying against road safety measures, encouraging motorists to take risks and then offering bouquets of flowers to bereaved families at a discount. Police are also investigating a rise in knife-crime, amid reports of scissor-wielding flower arrangers said to be roaming certain inner-city areas.
