Researchers abandon hunt for heart and soul post office
Researchers have abandoned a five-month hunt to find a village post office that is the heart and soul of the community.
Professor Alfred Weeks, who led the search, said ‘We tried to locate a village post office that was a vital part of rural life but only came upon desultory outlets selling postage stamps, postal orders, and packs of lager.’ The study found that the main activity around village post offices was a campaign to save village post offices. ‘Even then, most campaign meetings take place in Tesco coffee shops.’
