Man discovers lost years of his life were spent watching The Wire
A man who has been unable to account for a six-year gap in his life has discovered that he was at home watching The Wire throughout the lost years.
‘Between June 2002 and March 2008, there was this complete black hole in my memory,’ said Mr George Bacon, 52, a retired librarian from Scunthorpe. ‘I’d racked my brains to find out where I was and what I was doing but until today I drew a complete blank. Now it seems I was at home all the time watching The Wire.’
Professor of Psychiatry and Media at Oxford University, Richard Reith, said that he Mr Bacon’s case was not unique. Professor Reith said he predicted a sharp increase in cases. He said: ‘My clinic is preparing for an influx of patients whose memory loss will relate to Strictly Come Dancing and the X Factor. Needless to say, we anticipate deep amnesia.’
Mr Bacon is also concerned about another black hole in his memory. ‘I’ve got this three-year gap starting around 2001 which I think might be when I was into watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy,’ he said. ‘But I’ve decided not to bother about treatment until I’ve spent part of my life watching The Hobbit in 2011 and 2012.’
Mr Bacon said he recovered his lost six years only when a friend gave him a DVD set of The Wire as a birthday present; ‘As I started watching, I thought, Shit! I recognise that Baltimore tower, yo, and that motherfucker nigga, Snotboogie, yo – and it all come flooding back to me, man.’
