Benitez ‘guarantees’ early Champions League exit next season
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has dismissed speculation that Liverpool will fail to finish fourth in the Premiership and thus earn the right to crash out of the Champions League next October. The Spaniard said that he is 100% confident that the club can match or even exceed this season’s level of humdrum mediocrity next year.
‘Now that we are out of the FA Cup, we can focus on being slightly less rubbish than Aston Villa for the rest of the season,’ Benitez said. ‘In fact, with the new players I plan to bring in, there is every possiblity that we can actually pip some Slovakian part-timers to third in our Champions League pool next year and bumble into the quarter finals of the Europa League instead.’
