Campaigners are celebrating today after it was announced that the Staffordshire Hoard is to remain in the West Midlands.
The target of £3.3m was reached after an eagle-eyed campaigner spotted a TV advert for Cash4Gold.com.
‘It was simple. All I had to do was put the collection of sword pommels, helmet parts and processional crosses into an envelope and send it to Freepost Cash4Gold,’ the anonymous viewer revealed. ‘Two weeks later they sent me a cheque for £3.3m. And their offices are near Alton Towers, so everyone’s a winner.’
Cash4Gold confirmed that ‘a large envelope’ containing some Saxon-looking jewellery had been received, but gave no date for the priceless collection to go on public display. ‘I’ll get back to you on that,’ said an evasive spokesman. ‘That’s a nice wedding ring. Give you a fiver for it?’
