Following consultation with the police and motoring organisations, the Met Office has decided to take the unprecedented step of recalling this year’s spring on grounds of safety.
‘The prospect of good weather over the upcoming bank holiday weekend could lead to a dramatic increase in the number of people taking to the roads to see people and do things,’ said a spokesman. ‘That’s not a risk we are prepared to take, so we have today decided to recall spring and revert to using the previous season, winter. This change will take effect immediately and remain in operation over the entire Easter holiday period.’
Spring is expected to be re-introduced in mid-April, but the Met Office has warned that further recalls could be ordered for the May Day and Whitsun bank holidays. No promises were made about summer.
