AWB mortified at Swastika resemblance mistake
Senior members of South Africa’s Afrikaaner Widerstand Beweging are embarrassed at realising their party flag is as close as you can possibly get to a swastika without actually being one. Officials fear this may cause negative publicity as they to embrace the centre ground
Flag designer Martin Beyerskloof commented: ‘I actually based it on the three-legged flag of the Isle of Man. It’s essentially a nostalgic tribute to the two glorious weeks I spent at a B&B in Douglas.’
A competition to design a new flag is now under way and party faithful have already submitted designs including a rainbow flag with all of the colours removed and a gazelle being attacked by a lion looking vaguely like the late Eugene Terreblanche.
