Isle of Wight rejects Textspeak in Scrabble
Residents of the Sunny Glades Retirement Home in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, have reacted with mild irritation to Mattel’s announcement that it is changing the rules of Scrabble to allow players to include SMS-speak and ‘gangsta rap’ as playable words, even though they do not appear in the Oxford English Dictionary.
Fank Gregory, captain of the Scrabble team, said that listening to the entire back catalogue of NWA was an unnecessary burden on residents. Many elderly women, he added, are now struggling to distinguish a genuine attempt at the game and a cry for assistance from the nursing staff, especially with words such as ‘PMSL’.
Added Gregory: ‘If dem Mattel MOFOs be dissin’ my bitches one mo’ time, I gonna bust dey ass, let me tell you Sunny Jim’.
