Eyjafjallajokull public profile massively boosted by TV appearance
A previously obscure Icelandic volcano has benefited from an enormous swell in public recognition after appearing on national television last week with opinion polls now showing that it is almost as popular as Vesuvius. ‘It just goes to show that the reach of the media is extraordinary today,’ said the Scandinavian glacier, which has been spewing forth regularly for many years, but has received little acknowledgement before Wednesday’s live TV exposure.
‘It’s no secret I’ve always lagged behind the big boys – people didn’t even know my name this time last week – but now I’m on everyone’s lips. And several international flights too.’
But the mainstream volcanoes were quick to attack Eyjafjallajokull’s relative inexperience in the public arena and suggested that the public would soon tire of the new kid on the block. ‘The fact is, he looks very impressive on screen, but there’s no real substance to him,’ said Mount Etna. ‘Ultimately, it’s just a load of hot air.’Click to send this story to a friend
