There has been anger and disbelief throughout the world of athletics after a police motorcyclist won the London Marathon.
PC Andy Stanton, a traffic officer with the Metropolitan police based at Southwark, crossed the finish line in a time of two hours, four minutes and 34 seconds. He beat the previous record, set by Ethiopian athlete Samuel Wanjiru in 2009, by over half a minute.
He had escorted the elite male runners over the entire 26 mile course from Greenwich to The Mall and was first to reach the tape, to cheers and applause from spectators.
The elite athletes, many of whom had travelled thousands of miles to compete, were left bemused and disappointed as none of them made the podium. Second and third places went to BBC motorcycle cameramen Bob Hastings and Dean Ferguson.
