Nick Clegg ‘bricking it’ at prospect of entering government
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has admitted that he is ‘bricking it’ at the thought that he may end up helping to run the country by the end of the week.
The revelation explains Clegg’s sudden decision to soft-pedal plans for a Conservative-Liberal coalition and instead move towards a Liberal-Labour deal, delaying the formation of the next government by a few more days.
‘I can probably blag it with Mandelson for a day or two, and then Miriam could write me a sick note for Friday, but beyond that I’m freaking out that I might end up running the Foreign Office or God knows what,’ Clegg said candidly, admitting he was under pressure from party activists not to get into anything ‘too heavy’. ’I might even have to start making decisions. This isn’t what I bargained for when I took over from Ming Campbell – I’m a Liberal Democrat, for God’s sake.’
