Football fans ‘understanding’ as pub TV is switched to Sex and the City

stars got all moody just before half-timeDozens of England supporters remained philosophical and open-minded at the Market Tavern in Leeds yesterday, when the girlfriend of one football fan declared that she would rather watch a re-run of Sex and the City playing on E4 +1 than the crucial opening game of England’s World Cup campaign.

The pub, bedecked in St George’s flags and union jacks had a special offer on lagers and pizzas, and all four giant screens were just showing the teams coming out onto the pitch for likely Group C decider when Ellie Goffe, 24, took the remote control and switched to the popular feminine ‘romantic dramedy’.

‘One or two of the lads mumbled a word or two of disappointment that they wouldn’t be seeing the game’ said Nick Naylor, a local van driver, ‘but most of us felt pretty guilty for presuming the pub would be showing the football. Ellie has just as much right to watch the TV as all the rest of us and so we just settled down to watch Sex and the City instead.’

Soon over a hundred young men in England shirts were cheering the confident liberated female characters and their brave life choices in the face of the increasing demands upon modern professional women.

‘One Carrie Bradshaw! There’s only one Carrie Bradshaw!!’ chanted the lads, as Sarah Jessica Parker attended a Manhattan fashion show but returned early to her stylish Upper East Side apartment feeling conflicted in the battle between independence and loneliness.

‘Then we all screamed and covered our eyes in horror’ said Dave, 19, a local butcher; ‘when we saw that Samantha and Charlotte had turned up to a lifestyle magazine launch in the same outfit! Somebody got a text saying there had been a great goal in the England match, but the whole pub shouted them down; No! Leave this is on, we have to see how this turns out!’

The pub is now planning to completely change its screening schedule, advertising such forthcoming highlights as ‘Trinny and Susannah’s What Not to Wear’ and ‘Gok Wan in How to Look Good Naked’. Meanwhile English star of Sex and the City Kim Cattrall has been contacted by Fabio Capello as a possible replacement goalie for Rob Green.
