Appearing at a charity fundraiser yesterday, comedian Ronnie Corbett once again attracted comments that unlike almost every other celebrity, he actually appears bigger in the flesh than on the screen.
‘The whole ‘short bloke’ thing was a way of exaggerating the differences between me, Ronnie Barker and John Cleese on The Frost Report,’ said the 79-year-old who is actually 5 feet 7 inches tall. ‘I just used to stand a few feet back from the other two and it looked as if I was tiny.’
The deception later involved the use of oversized props, including his glasses and the chair from The Two Ronnies, and on the pro-celebrity golf circuit he plays with comically huge clubs and hires a very large caddy.
Now that the truth is out, film producers are said to be planning a biopic of Ronnie Corbett. Hollywood giant Tom Cruise is rumoured for the leading role.
