Offenders are to be offered an alternative to incarceration. Instead they can be sentenced to a shitty unrewarding job, with a bullying boss who takes out his self loathing on underlings, for a salary that just about covers their outgoings.
Though ostensibly offering ex-prisoners the freedom to come and go as they please, many complained that the yoke of oppression weighs on them more heavily than ever. ‘It was never this bad in open prison,’ said one, ‘and we didn’t have to pay for a TV license. It’s a jungle out here and I don’t know how people survive – although having said that, shower times are a lot more bearable.’
