Journalist found guilty of tapping his own phone
John Wenders, a senior editor at the News of The World has been found guilty of hacking into his own voicemails.
Justice Pritchard summing up the case concluded ‘You have acted maliciously, wantonly and against the spirit of the PCC Code of Practice. Not content with dressing up as a ‘phony sheikh’ and offering yourself huge bribes, you even encouraged a false prostitute meet you somewhere where you knew your face would be grainy and blurred.’
‘Entrapment is one thing, but knowingly listening in to messages which were left for you in confidence is beyond the pale. I think I am right in saying that no decent, professional man would ever stoop so low as to listen to messages which were clearly intended for him.’
Max Clifford, acting for Mr Wenders, said his client had nothing to say, and would be doing so in 2,000 words next Sunday, complete with a picture showing the humiliating basque and suspenders he forced himself to wear.Click to send this story to a friend
