Tawdry souvenir industry welcomes Royal engagement

Finally starting to look a bit dated. Whatever 'dated' means.

The engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton could propel Britain out of recession by giving the tawdry souvenir industry ‘a shot in the arm’, say experts.

‘It’s wonderful news,’ said an industry spokesman. ‘We’ve been coasting a little bit in recent years on Diana postcards, but this announcement opens up opportunities to develop a whole new array of unspeakably tasteless Royalty-themed tat for the twenty-first century.’

Several new product launches are expected soon, and the spokesman confirmed that one innovative company has already printed 25 million Royal Wedding sick bags. ‘That should see the country through until about mid-2011,’ he said. ‘Then it’s spoons, thimbles, cheap canvas prints, postcards, pens, keyrings and commemorative books. Oh, and mugs – we mustn’t forget our customers.’
