Publicity-starved Jedward ask if, hypothetically, the incest taboo applies to same-sex siblings

XJohn and Edward Grimes, the twin entertainers better known as ‘Jedward’, took a break between songs during a personal appearance at Kingston’s Bentall Shopping Centre yesterday afternoon to discuss, in hypothetical terms, the relevance of the incest taboo in a same-sex sibling context.

After last year’s 6th-place X-Factor finishers delivered their signature Under Pressure/Ice Ice Baby mash-up, John turned to address the crowd of over 200 eight to twelve-year-olds and their parents. ‘You know, people say that we’re like Marmite – you either love us or hate us.’ Then, pausing to meet the eye of the reporter from the Kingston Advertiser, he added: ‘And I guess you could say the same about homosexual incest.’

Jumping into the silence that followed a few confused cheers, Edward continued his brother’s train of thought. ‘That’s right, John, it certainly does polarise people, that one. But you know, if you believe that the whole incest taboo is founded on the hard-wired primal understanding of the genetic and social advantages of exogamy, then with zero chance of genetic offspring, surely that doesn’t apply to same-sex siblings. Hypothetically speaking. I’m sure papers get a lot of letters on the subject.’

John seamlessly followed his brother’s comments by pointing out that, ‘on the other hand, the Westermarck effect – that children reared together, regardless of biological relationship, form a sentimental attachment that is by its nature non-erotic – suggests that regardless of genetic consequences, the incest taboo arises naturally in small human groups as a reflection of innate attitudes to relationship norms, and would therefore apply equally to homosexual as well as heterosexual relationships among siblings.’

Edward then summarised the exchange with, ‘so I guess you could say it’s a bit of a grey area, but maybe ripe for a thoughtful editorial in a respected local newspaper.’

‘Anyway, enough of that, we want you all dancing for this one, cos this is Ghostbusters!’
