Debenhams retain police suspect blanket contract
Debenhams bosses were said to be ‘quietly triumphant’ yesterday after it was finally announced that their company had retained the contract to provide more than 30 UK police forces with the blankets used by officers to cover suspects’ heads as they enter and leave court buildings.
The contract was made after a vicious contest between Debenhams and bitter rivals John Lewis with each side accusing the other of improper approaches to Government officials to secure the contract. Eventually it was decided to ignore the softly ,softly approach of John Lewis featuring Egyptian cotton, in favour of the Debenhams chavvier designer range which would make the accused feel more at home.
A Home Office spokesman later said the process had been conducted entirely properly and denied there had been any cover up.
