The Big Lie 100, the league table of the biggest lies in modern society, has seen the email marketing promise ‘You could win an iPad2’ surge to the top of Britain’s shortlist of deceptive phrases.
‘For years, staple lies like ‘It could be you’, ‘Let’s do lunch’ and ‘Your call is important to us’ dominated social parlance,’ said professor Gerry Hambleton. ‘But the boom in e-marketing has seen a new breed of untruth appear, and now the old lies just can’t cut it against ‘There are thousands of singles in your area waiting to meet you’ and ‘We will not pass this information to a third party.’
Hambleton estimates that there are currently 203,798 competitions running in Britain which offer an iPad2 as a prize. He was unable to provide a precise figure when contacted, and kept telling callers they ‘were breaking up’.
