Suu Kyi reveals how DJ Dave Lee Travis was worse than junta
Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has said she spent her fifteen years under house arrest listening to Dave Lee Travis’ BBC World Service music show in the hope her request would be broadcast.
‘Week after week, month after month, I tuned into Dave’s A Jolly Good Show hoping to hear my letter read out and request played – but it never happened.
‘On some days I thought my spirit would break, but somehow I found the strength to carry on, fervently believing that one day I would succeed and ‘Help!’ would be played.’
Ms Suu Kyi, who is due to give two of the BBC’s Reith Lectures, said she would gladly exchange them for a request on A Jolly Good Show.
A spokesman for Ms Suu Kyi’s party said they were shocked to hear of their leader’s fifteen-year ordeal.
‘After this, the Hairy Cornflake can give up any hope of becoming prime minister of Burma,’ he said.
