While much of America’s eastern seaboard was counting the cost of hurricane Irene and beginning the clean up, Herb and Ida Weinman returned to their home in Long Island to discover the storm had left them a new garage, a 20ft yacht and a wrought iron patio set complete with gas-fired barbecue.
Herb expressed his sorrow for those who had lost so much in the terrible storms, but added: ‘Mind you, the garage is roughly where I’d have erected it anyway, it just needs a little patching up, and the yacht is great. We haven’t been sailing for years – we’re gonna need a towbar on the pickup now!’
Wife Ida added: ‘Our thoughts are with the victims, of course, but just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we went round to the yard to find the new table, chairs and barbecue – it’s like Christmas, except I actually wanted the Excelsior 6-burner model. Still, beggars can’t be choosers!’
