Earliest Harold Pinter ‘pause’ discovered

An enormous Harold Pinter pause, dating back to 1958, has been discovered in the British Library and could be the earliest yet found.

‘It’s extraordinary….. quite extraordinary.’ enthused Jeremy Sandersfield of the British Library, adding ‘That wasn’t it though, just then, when I paused after the word ‘extraordinary’, that wasn’t it. No, the Pinter pause we’ve discovered is much longer with, we believe, a hint of throat-clearance.’

However, one Pinter expert, in particular, is not convinced. ‘It’s a genuine Pinter manuscript, I’ll give them that. This pause though, I’ve seen it for myself and it just looks like two pages in between some dialogue that were stuck together.  And as for the supposed ‘throat clearance’, well, that seems like reason they were stuck together in the first place, so, I think we all know what that is.’

Jeremy and his colleagues, meanwhile, are well aware they still need to check the veracity of their find. ‘We’ve submitted our proof to literary historians and are waiting to hear back from them. At least we think we are…’
