Banner on bypass ‘probably not best way to come out’, admits gay dad
When Swindon man, Dave White, 44, decided to announce his homosexuality, he did it in a big way – by hanging a 6ft banner across a roundabout on the bypass by his daughter’s school, proclaiming ‘I’m a big gay and so’s my boyfriend, signed Dave White.’
‘Of course I noticed Dad had been using conditioner on his hair and had taken to wearing a snood,’ said his 16-year-old daughter, ‘but I never thought it was because he was on the turn. I almost fell off my bike when I read the banner.’
Dave admits that he could have handled the situation more sensitively. ‘I was trying to be open and honest, and what could be more open and honest than proclaiming my sexuality in two-foot high, day-glo letters?’
It is not the first time he has broken dramatic news inappropriately. The day his mum died he told his father at half-time of a Charlton Athletic game over the loudspeaker.
