Man announces intention to boycott Diamond Jubilee celebrations
A 69-year-old Dewsbury man has said he will not take part in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Fred Ashcroft has ignored every royal celebration since the Queen’s coronation in 1953, which he spent drowning cats in a nearby canal. He is infamous in his local post office for ostentatiously sticking postage stamps with the Queen’s head upside down on his letters.
‘I’m having nought to do with it,’ he told his local newspaper. Instead, he says he will spend the Jubilee weekend ‘playing with my ferrets as normal’.
Mr Ashcroft, who leads his own anti-monarchist party, said he will make only one concession to the Diamond Jubilee – flying the union flag upside down outside his house.
He says he is determined to die before he reaches 100 years of age to thwart any attempt by the reigning monarch to send him a birthday card.
