Summer riots to go ahead despite Olympics
The traditional week of summer rioting is to go ahead with East London expected to be transformed into a colourful spectacle of burning, fighting and looting.
Earlier fears that the Olympic ‘feel good factor’ might disrupt the hopelessness felt by millions have proved groundless. The organisers say the spectacle of corporate greed has given the ever popular riot season a boost.
One organiser said ‘we hope young people really get into the spirit of what the riots are all about – looting off-licenses, JD Sports and PC World. We hope to leave a real legacy of misery and destruction’.
Although the opening ceremony is a tightly kept secret, it’s expected to involve a drunken mob of thousands and at least one burnt-out police station.
But Lord Coe has roundly condemned the event.
‘The trouble with these things,’ he said, ‘is that they tend to get spoilt by participants who use a lot of drugs.’
