BBC to broadcast ‘no poppy’ warnings
The BBC is to warn viewers when anyone not wearing a poppy is about to appear on BBC television channels.
‘Just as we warn viewers of flash photography,’ said a BBC spokesman, ‘over the next few days we shall warn viewers who may be shocked by people appearing on BBC channels who are not wearing a poppy. We want to give viewers a chance to leave the room.’
Reports that in past years the BBC turned a blind eye to people appearing on programmes without a lapel poppy are being investigated.
‘Many people have recently come forward to say they were aware of people not wearing poppies,’ the spokesman said, ‘but unaccountably did nothing about it.’
Past Top of the Pops programmes are being scrutinised for evidence of guests not wearing poppies.
