Justin Welby hesitant over gay weddings but wants more gay funerals
Archbishop of Canterbury designate Justin Welby has confirmed that while he is opposed to gay weddings he would be happy to see more gay funerals.
‘Justin is reaching out to the gay community,’ said a Church of England spokesperson, ‘and is at the same time solving the split among Anglicans.’
The move is likely to be popular with African clergy who already see it as part of their ministry to help homosexuals towards an early grave.
But Church of England insiders predict that gay funerals will lead to a split just as serious as that over gay marriage.
‘The Bible speaks only of heterosexual death,’ a conservative Anglican pointed out. ‘Some Anglicans are going to find it difficult making a serious matter like a funeral into a gay affair.
‘There is already controversy about what we do with dead women bishops.’
