South African Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been granted bail pending his trial for the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp – but only on the condition a cattle grid is placed outside his house.
The unprecedented bail condition was imposed by Magistrate Desmond Nair because he said Pistorius had the ability to ‘jump bail’.
‘I do not believe the accused – if faced with a cattle grid – is any more likely to do a runner than if in jail from which he could be easily sprung,’ he said, shortly after the investigating police officer had described Pistorius as ‘an amateur’.
After the magistrate’s ruling, Pistorius was observed to leave the court with a spring in his step.
