Labour leader Ed Miliband revealed a new departure on the Andrew Marr show this morning: he is going to play a new character in Downton Abbey.
The series, which is about to cover the 192-21 period, will feature a sub-plot involving butler Carson dabbling with the trade union movement. Miliband stars as Jack Militant, or ‘Thoroughly Modern Milly’, shop steward of the Allied Union of Downstairs Staff, at nearby Motley Hall. He will feature in three episodes, culminating in a showdown with the Dowager Countess of Grantham on the croquet lawn.
Miliband hopes that the role will increase his profile while documenting the rise of the unions in Britain. He added that he was excited to be following in the thespian footsteps of Glenda Jackson, Michael Cashman and pop video star Neil Kinnock.
