Tensions between the United Kingdom and Spain reached ever higher levels as a member of the Gibraltarian parliament was stopped at the Spanish Border and subjected to the ignominy of having his Diplomatic Bag searched.
Border officials removed assorted items, including 200 Benson and Hedges, a bottle of Fitou and a large box of Ferrero Rocher, thought to be destined for the British Ambassador in Madrid.
In a statement released by the government in Gibraltar, the overseas territory noted its’ discontent with the situation. ‘By doing this, Spain have violated the terms of the Vienna Treaty regarding Diplomatic Bags.’
The statement continued, ‘Furthermore, through the confiscation of items contained within, the border officials have compromised the United Kingdom’s abilities to hold elegant and successful receptions at the embassy. This form of abuse towards dignitaries of her majesty shall not be tolerated.’
Across the border in Spain, the Border Authority released a counter statement. ‘Echulente, with these Rocher you are really spoiling us.’
