Speaking at the launch of his party’s White Paper on independence from the UK, the SNP leader said ‘England is as much Scotland’s as London’s asset. It is certainly not David Cameron’s asset. We put forward in this paper our willingness to accept liabilities. We are also entitled to the share of assets.’
Salmond went on to urge Scottish voters to grasp a ‘once-in-a-generation’ opportunity to leave the UK at the same time as hanging onto all the best bits.
Alistair Darling, the leader of the Better Together campaign, dismissed the proposal as a work of fiction: ‘It is a fantasy to say Scotland can leave the UK but still keep all the benefits of UK membership,’ he said before adding: ‘If they want Wales, we might be willing to talk.’
