The Twinning of the Sussex seaside City of Brighton and Hove and the Russian Coastal resort and Olympic host city Sochi has been cancelled at the eleventh hour by Russian officials, who cited “Irreconcilable differences”.
Many were disappointed by the news, given the similarities between the two locations. Both were historically popular holiday locations in the days before air travel; both are built at the foot of large hills; both are popular with the ruling classes – Sochi attracting the likes of Stalin and Putin, and Brighton being host to many Tory party conferences over the years. Visiting Russian officials were also particularly impressed by the “mini Kremlin” in the centre of Brighton.
Its not known yet what has caused Russia’s abrupt change of heart, but some are suggesting the atrocious climate could have been too much for even hardy Russian sensibilities.
