Boy George denied England captaincy because he was ‘no good at football’

In the next chapter of ‘I’m a fading celebrity with a book launch coming up’, Boy George has declared that he would have been a ‘shoo-in’ to captain the England football team into ‘at least two world cups’, but for the discrimination directed towards him by the FA because he was ‘completely useless at football’, having shown utter ineptitude for the sport at school and giving up playing soon afterwards to pursue a career in music.

At the time that the Karma Chameleon singer would have been at the height of his football powers, Bryan Robson had preferential treatment from the FA in selection for wearing the captain’s armband, with Boy George not even being considered for the England squad.  On at least one occasion he did attend Wembley as a spectator, however, and feels aggrieved at being ‘consistently overlooked’.

At the time, Boy George directed his frustrations to the FA in song with the lyrics, ‘Do you really want to hurt me, do you really want to make me cry’
