Disabled people with little interest in sport have complained that the Paralympics are making their lives harder because people are constantly bombarded with images of disabled people snowboarding, water-skiing, playing basketball and leaping around on spring-loaded blades.
‘No-one ever gives me a hand when I’m stuck at the foot of some stairs these days,’ said unremarkable wheelchair-bound amputee Brian Porter, 46. ‘At least when everyone pitied me I still got assistance boarding a train. Now they just stand and wait for me to do something awe-inspiring. I just hope that one day we will be allowed to be underachieving mediocrities like everyone else.’
