The creature moved from 1,5000,000th most popular creature in the UK right up to the coveted No1 spot, replacing kittens, puppies and meerkats as the nation’s favourite.
Pet shops have been reported being inundated with requests for jellyfish and a law has been hurriedly passed making it illegal to throw rocks at them.
Bank holiday traffic reached record levels yesterday with motorways brought to a standstill as people make their way to the coast in hopes of catching a glimpse of a jellyfish.
Moves are now under way to make the jellyfish a protected species, joining pandas, unicorns and LibDem voters on the endangered animal list.
