Fat cat care worker won’t hand back 7 pence an hour pay increase
A greedy care worker has been roundly condemned for refusing to hand back the 7 pence an hour increase in his minimum wage when it is introduced in October. Fred Ashcroft, 59, who earns the massive income of £5.73 an hour rising to a staggering £5.80 in October, was last night holed up in the Walsall council flat where he lives with his four children and disabled wife.
And Ashcroft’s fat cat 17-year-old son Jack, a hospital cleaner, defiantly declared that he too will be keeping his increase, which will send his hourly rate rocketing by 4 pence to an eye-watering £3.57 an hour.
David ‘Big Bucks’ Frost, director-general of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: ‘It’s an outrage that Ashcroft, who is already clearing around £11,500 a year, should now unashamedly trouser another 7 pence for every hour – every single hour, that he works. We’ve enough to contend with in this recession without Ashcroft’s greed bringing British business to its knees.’
Tory MP Christopher Chope (£64,766 plus expenses), whose ‘Peanuts Bill’ is now before Parliament says that workers should have the Human Right to be paid less than the minimum wage, and is demanding that Mr Ashcroft be made to appear before a Commons Select Committee; ‘It’s a scandal that when we are all having to tighten our belts, some people are making money hand over fist. It’s men like Ashcroft and his son who are responsible for the recession.’ Chope added; ‘This is a man who works as a carer in a home for the terminally ill, where people have actually died over the past few years. It seems to me that we are rewarding Mr Ashcroft for failure!’Click to send this story to a friend
