German war veterans wake up early to lay wreaths before British
Allied war veterans who got up extra early to lay tributes on the graves of fallen comrades were dismayed to find the Germans had got up even earlier, laid their wreaths on the graves and were already back at the hotel enjoying an early breakfast.
Soldiers from around the world rose at sunrise and headed for The Saint Symphorien Military Cemetery in Belgium only to find German colours were already draped over the headstones.
The allies say they had quite deliberately made a point of staying off the booze, eating dinner in their hotel room, reading a book and getting an early night in order to be first down to the cemetery.
But despite rising earlier than an insomniac Belgium lark it was still not enough to beat the Germans.Click to send this story to a friend
