There were confused scenes in Edinburgh yesterday as for the first time in his career Ed Miliband was recognised by bemused members of the public.
“His entourage were completely unprepared for it,” said an aide. “Ed’s worked hard to keep a low profile in the last few years, so it was a bit of a shock to be honest.”
Footage showed frenzied crowds of passersby jostling Mr Miliband and calling out as they excitedly tried to identify him.
“It’s him off the telly,” shouted one man. “He’s always browsing at the market stalls in the background on Eastenders.”
“Edward!” called out one woman. “You and your twin brother were brilliant on X-Factor.”
A Labour Party spokesman later confirmed that Mr Miliband was in Edinburgh in support of the ‘No’ campaign. “Ed’s asking the public to say ‘No’. We’re treating it as a dry run for 2015.”
