UK Gold secures rights to show replays of all Premier League games from 1992

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore has announced that the rights to show full replays of all 38 Premier League games played in the 1992/93 season have been sold to the TV channel UK Gold for an undisclosed fee. The popular channel, more notable for repeating classic sitcoms from the 80s and 90s, has also purchased the repeats of all Match of the Day episodes from the same year.

Scudamore has said that other bids from rival channels, including Dave and Challenge TV, were ‘simply blown out of the water’ by UK Gold, who will be paying a substantial percentage of the fee to cover the wages of Des Lynam, Mark Lawrenson and occasional 90s pundit Bob Wilson. Speaking outside the old MOTD headquarters in London, veteran presenter Des Lynam said: ‘This is great; I feel like I’ve finally got some TV work again. Kind of.’

Darren Childs, Chief Executive of UK Gold, said he was ‘delighted’ with the successful bid: ‘UK Gold now offers the most comprehensive Saturday night entertainment package, as we present back-to-back games on a Saturday afternoon followed by that episode of Fawlty Towers where the man dies and they try to cover it up, with hilarious consequences. Basil Fawlty and classic thirty-yard screamers from Alan Shearer – what more could you ask for?’

He continued: ‘We’ve got David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst lined up to present a Match of the Day after show on Saturday, with Felicity Kendal and Nicholas Smith, who played the manager Mr Rumbold in Are You Being Served? providing expert analysis’.

Childs said he felt ‘positive’ when asked if he believed the investment will be worthwhile for the channel, which itself was launched in 1992. ‘We are confident that our new £40 monthly subscription will be received well by sports fans. My only concern at the moment is that the 1992/93 Season Review DVD is widely available online for about a fiver, but nobody will know that, surely? We were going to bid on all the new stuff that BT and Sky Sports fight tooth and nail for, but then that’s not what UK Gold is all about. At least with our sports package you know exactly what you’re going to get. Quite literally’.
