A leading member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has attacked the lack of white actors taking part in the boycott of this year’s Oscar ceremony. ‘The list of actors boycotting the Oscars is predominantly black’ says 77 year old Academy member Larry Hansen. ‘Where are all the white actors? Surely in this day and age it’s not acceptable for the protest to be so racially homogenous. There may be one or two white actors who have spoken out but frankly this feels tokenistic’
Hansen believes that for future boycotts to have any credibility changes have to be made. ‘If next year’s boycott isn’t more ethnically diverse then it will be easy to dismiss. After all it’s the 21st century and any boycott of the Oscars has to reflect the diverse nature of the industry’.
So does Hansen believe that actors boycotting this year’s ceremony are justified in their protest? ‘Absolutely. I am passionate that members of the African-American community should be represented and play a full role in the Oscar ceremony’ says Hansen. ‘Otherwise who’s going to park my car for me?’
