Controversial sports commentator John Inverdale, who has often caused offence with his unguarded remarks about female athletes, has successfully completed the BBC’s notoriously tough diversity and sensitivity training course. Inverdale described himself as ‘a changed man’ following the training, which he said had opened his eyes to the offence his earlier remarks might inadvertently have given.
‘The truth is, I’m all for birds playing tennis, always have been. I don’t even care if they’re munters, so long as the dishes don’t pile up in the sink.’ He added that he was a particular fan of Venus and Serena Williams. ‘And they’re darkies too, so I’m definitely not prejudiced.’ The BBC said they were glad to welcome Inverdale back, though he stressed that he would have been perfectly happy to get back to his first love, touring as lead singer with the band Foregone Conclusion.
