France, a country south of Britain, has elected a new leader, according to the French.

Crowds of them cheered their new President, Prime Minister, or whatever, as he waved victoriously at the crowds from well-known Gallic landmarks, expressing that this was an ‘important day for France’ – a reference to the fact that the contest is almost entirely certain to not be run again for a matter of years.

The result comes after some weeks of debating topical issues, sometimes accompanied by selections of cheese and pastries, and proved a relief to many after populist opposition lady Marine Le Pen De Ma Tante drew second by some percentage points.

Relief was also felt across Britain as many cheered with happy ambivalence over what the result means for the European Union, and stood in unison to perform the traditional French shrug before enquiring whether this would at all effect the plane route to Spain.
