Soldiers surrounding Buckingham Palace ‘are not a coup’

A spokesman for the British army this morning denied that troops stationed around the 91-year-old monarch’s residence constituted any kind of military takeover and insisted that they were ‘purely ceremonial’.

This is despite continuing rumours that the British establishment, including the army, had become increasingly worried that Britain’s frail and elderly head of state was planning to hand over control of the country to a much younger close relative, her unpopular, sandal-wearing, ‘alternative’ son.

The present monarch has been the British head of state continuously since even before the UK was liberated from the burden of its empire, and has never lost an election.
